‘’Sting’’ premiered in the United States and Canada on April 12, 2024. The film is set for release in New Zealand on May 16, 2024, followed by the United Kingdom on May 31, 2024, and Germany on June 20, 2024. It will also debut in Australia and Spain later in July 2024.
Written and directed by Kiah Roache-Turner, ”Sting” is a horror film featuring Ryan Corr, Alyla Browne, Penelope Mitchell, Robyn Nevin, Noni Hazelhurst, Silvia Colloca, Danny Kim, and Jermaine Fowler. The story centers around a young girl who secretly raises a spider that eventually morphs into a giant, terrifying creature.
Plot Summary
Charlotte, a defiant 12-year-old, lives in a rundown apartment building with her overworked stepfather Ethan, her mother Heather, and her baby half-brother Liam. Often left alone, Charlotte discovers a small spider that hatches from a mysterious glowing object that crashes into her great-aunt’s apartment. Fascinated, she decides to keep the spider as a pet and names it Sting.
As Charlotte tends to Sting, the spider begins to grow rapidly. She initially keeps its increasing size a secret, but as it becomes harder to conceal, Ethan and the neighbors start noticing unusual happenings in the building. Sting’s growing size and ravenous hunger soon result in the deaths of pets and residents. Tensions rise between Charlotte and her stepfather, especially as the unresolved issues regarding her biological father come to light. During a heated argument, Sting attacks Ethan and Heather while Charlotte is distracted with her brother.
The situation escalates when Sting, now an enormous spider, traps several residents in the building by mimicking sounds to lure its prey. Charlotte accidentally discovers the spider’s weakness from her grandmother and embarks on a mission to find her missing family. As she and Ethan team up, they face numerous challenges, including Sting’s intelligence and adaptability. The climax unfolds in the building’s basement, where Sting ambushes the group, leading to a fierce battle.
With Ethan’s help, Charlotte manages to lure Sting into a trap. Utilizing a trash compactor, they finally destroy the monstrous spider, though not without suffering significant losses. As the family reunites, they remain unaware that Sting has laid several eggs, one of which begins to hatch.
